Training Guide Example for Avoidance
Animals learn quickly by association, so when using Scent Dots, it’s important to praise as soon as you see the desired effect to create the positive association you want. For fastest results, within 2 seconds of them avoiding the dots.
For example, if you want your dog to avoid your kitchen trashcan, simply put a few saturated Scent Dots around the top of the trashcan where the smells are the most attractive. Wait for your dog to smell the Dots and once you notice them avoiding the can, praise them and reward them with a game, attention and/or a bonus treat if you’d like but away from the trashcan and only after the fun and playful attention you give them. Treats should not be given every single time, otherwise they may put together that they need to pay attention to the trashcan in the first place and we want them to learn to ignore it.
It's best to start with less attractive smells they desire in the trashcan at first, then build up to the more desired smells they would want to go for when you are away such as meat from dinners, etc.
This technique is the same for furniture, countertops or areas. Work up to more difficult circumstances such as you not being in the area or more attractive scents for them to avoid.
Remember, this is a training aid, and not to replace effective management so please do not leave harmful things where your animals can get to them when you are not supervising. Dogs have approximately 300 million scent receptors compared to our 6 million so they will smell much more than we do. Whatever you have in the trash or on counters will permeate the air and they will smell every smell where we will not. It also means you do not need much saturation with the oils on the Dots so use no more than 2-3 drops of oil when re-saturating the dots otherwise the backing may come off of the Dot.
Note: Adhesive may not be appropriate for some fabrics, please test in an inconspicuous place first. Also, please do not put oil directly on pet.
